Self-care has become a bit of a buzzword in recent years. It’s used to justify everything from spa days to staying at home wrapped in blankets binge-watching our favorite shows. The fact that it’s become a well-known phrase shows how overworked and over stressed we are, as a culture. It’s become the rallying cry of anxious office workers and the hot new slogan of many advertising campaigns. We may talk a big game about self care but what does that really mean? It isn’t just about taking time off to indulge, it’s about taking care of yourself, and that means moderation. Here are some great self care ideas for you.

Nutrition and Flavor

Food is often what we think of when we talk about self-care. What was a “cheat day” or a “cheat meal” is now “self-care.” That’s exactly what it is and exactly what it should be. Having a tasty snack after a stressful day isn’t cheating, it’s being kind to yourself, but only eating delicious snack foods and never eating anything healthy isn’t self care either. Dieting to lose weight and stay healthy can also be self-care, when used in moderation. The only thing you can’t compromise on is nutrition. Whether you’re balancing your meals carefully or using supplements like Nucific , ensure your body has all the nutrients it needs.

Stylish and Practical Self Care Ideas

Buying clothes is another area we sometimes consider self-care. Sometimes that means spending a little extra money on that really nice pair of shoes you love. However, sometimes it means wearing your comfiest hoodie, even though you really should get dressed and go out. Just like before, it’s all about balance. Blowing your whole budget on clothes won’t do you any good in the long run. On the other hand, you can’t wear those cozy sweatpants to work either. 

Savings and Creature Comforts

Regarding when to spend and when to save, self-care is making sure you have enough savings in case of disaster. However, saving every penny can be stressful. You also need a release valve, to indulge in some creature comforts. It’s okay to treat yourself once in a while, as long as you also take care of your savings account. Identify where you’ll get the best value self-care bucks, and remember that your needs and wants are unique to you. 

Relaxation and Exercise

Relaxation and exercise are both healthy self-care ideas. Exercise can be an excellent stress-reliever, but many people find going to the gym miserable and stressful. Therefore, it’s important to strike a balance between the two. Find exercise that you enjoy and it won’t feel like work anymore, which will make it easier to avoid overindulging in leisure time. You don’t want to become a couch potato. 

Passion and Obsession

Another form of self-care is following your passion. Your passion might even be your job, if you’re very fortunate. Doing work that you love is extremely fulfilling, whether it’s your dream job or indulging in your favorite hobby. No matter what, it’s important not to confuse a healthy obsession with one that destroys your quality of life. Remember to keep your head and strike a  balance when you’re pursuing a passion. It can easily consume your life. 

Quiet Time and Socialization

Sometimes it’s tempting to sort the world into introverts and extraverts and then categorize ourselves as 100% one thing or the other. The truth is that most people are a little bit of both. Perhaps you need more alone time than other people, and perhaps you need less, the difficulty is making certain that you have the right amount of both.

Self Esteem and Humility

The ultimate goal of all this is to take care of yourself enough to build your self-esteem. Take care of yourself to show that you do care about yourself, and remember that this is all the more important during those times when you don’t have very high self esteem. Sometimes it really is about faking it until you make it, even with self-care . Find a balance between taking care of yourself and making sure that you’ve done all the work you need to do, even when it’s hard. 

Pure indulgence isn’t self-care. Self-care ideas involve remembering to take care of yourself when you’ve spent too long prioritizing work, but it’s also about disciplining yourself when you’ve spent too long indulging. Laziness is a kind of overindulgence, but so is overworking. Neither one is proper self-care. Self-care is about striking a balance between the things you want to do for yourself and the things you have to do for yourself. In the end, it boils down to this: all things in moderation, even self-care.
